Bone conduction
solutions

If you or your child have conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss or are deaf in one ear, also known as single-sided deafness, a bone conduction solution may help you or your child hear.

What is Bone Conduction?

Bone conduction solutions use your body’s natural ability to deliver sound vibrations through the bones in your skull directly to your functional inner ear, so you can experience your surroundings and enjoy your daily activities.

Our latest bone conduction solution, the Cochlear™ Osia® System, is an active osseointegrated steady-state implant that uses piezoelectric stimulation to send sound to your inner ear.

The Cochlear Baha® System uses advanced technologies to transmit sound to your inner ear. There are different sound processor models to choose from, each designed to treat a different level of hearing loss.

Active OS Implants

Active osseointegrated steady-state implants (OS implants) use the principle of bone conduction, but unlike traditional bone conduction solutions, OS implants deliver sound vibrations through digital piezoelectric stimulation.

They use an implanted component that expands and contracts within the implant to send sound vibrations through the bones in your skull directly to your working inner ear.

The Cochlear Osia System features these main components:

• External sound processor that captures sound in the air – the Osia 2 Sound Processor is lightweight, durable, and features state-of-the-art connectivity options.

• Internal implant – our active OS implant, the Cochlear Osia OSI200 Implant, is placed under the skin. Its base, the Cochlear BI300 Implant, is designed to promote faster and stronger integration to the bone. The Piezo Power™ transducer that sits inside the OSI200 implant is designed to deliver long-term performance and durability.

Together, these components bypass the part of the ear that isn’t working. The vibrations from the Piezo Power transducer travel to the inner ear where they are converted into electrical impulses and sent to the brain to be interpreted as sound.

Benefits of Active OS Implants

Improves your understanding of speech in quiet and in noisy environments.
Enjoy improved sound quality by bypassing the blocked part of the ear to reduce the amount of amplification needed to hear better.
Hear better, even in noisy situations.
If you’ve been told a bone conduction implant is a treatment option for your hearing loss, you can experience the benefits of bone conduction hearing with our non-surgical bone conduction solutions, before deciding whether to get an implant.

You can trial a Baha sound processor with your hearing health professional or at home. This will help you experience hearing through bone conduction and feel more prepared to decide whether to get an implant.

How bone conduction implants work?

The Cochlear™ Baha® System uses advanced technologies to transmit sound to your inner ear. It’s designed to help you hear clear, rich and natural sound1 so you can engage in many of the activities you enjoy. The Baha sound processors have different power levels to fit your level of hearing loss.

Our flexible Cochlear Baha System includes the following main components:

• Sound processor – the sound processor captures sound in the air.

• Connection between sound processor and implant to secure the sound processor. The connection is either Baha Connect, an abutment connection, or Baha Attract, a magnetic connection.

• Internal implant – all our bone conduction solutions use the stable foundation of the Cochlear BI300 Implant with proven long-term reliability and sound transmission.

Together, these parts bypass the blocked part of the ear, sending vibrations directly through the bone to the inner ear.

Benefits of Bone conduction implants

Research and decades of experience have shown that bone conduction solutions may help you or your child:

• Hear better, even in noisy situations.

• Enjoy improved sound quality (compared to hearing aids) by bypassing the blocked part of the ear to reduce the amount of amplification needed to hear better.

• Enjoy improved speech recognition (compared to hearing aids).

• Develop language skills for children using Baha Start, with a Baha Softband or SoundArc™.

If you’ve been told a bone conduction implant is a treatment option for your hearing loss, you can experience the benefits of bone conduction hearing with our non-surgical bone conduction solution before you decide whether to get an implant.

You can trial a Baha sound processor with your hearing health professional or at home. This will help you experience hearing through bone conduction and feel more prepared to decide on an implantable solution.

Non Surgical bone conduction solutions

Cochlear™ Baha® Start is a non-surgical bone conduction solution that can help you or your child hear until you’re ready for an implantable solution. It’s designed to deliver sound to support your child’s development on par with hearing peers.

It uses a Softband or a SoundArc™ and a Baha sound processor to transmit sound to the inner ear.

Baha Start includes the following main components:

Sound processor – one or two Baha sound processors that capture sound in the air.
A Softband or SoundArc – the sound processor is connected to a Softband or a SoundArc to keep it in place and transmit sound vibrations to the inner ear.
Together, these parts bypass the blocked part of the ear, sending vibrations directly through the bone to the inner ear.

Bone conduction solutions can help people with single-sided deafness, conductive hearing loss or mixed hearing loss.

With Baha Start, young children are able to gain access to sound using either a Baha Soft band or SoundArc with a Baha Sound Processor. These are non-surgical bone conduction solutions that may give children the hearing performance they need to help develop language skills.

If you are considering an implantable bone conduction solution, you’ll be able to try hearing through bone conduction with Baha Start. When you decide to move on with a hearing implant, you and your hearing health professional will discuss what solution is right for you.
